What are the things to consider when choosing a real estate agent?

Finding the right real estate agent is one of the challenges of buying or selling a home. When you have a qualified and trustworthy agent by your side, you not only have someone to guide you through the real estate process, you also know that your time and money will be in good hands.

Here’s what to look out for when choosing a real estate agent:

  1. Right credentials

A real estate agent’s designations and certifications tell you what they specialize in and what skills and knowledge they have attained. Once you start searching for potential real estate agents, consider their designations and whether or not they will be useful in helping you reach your real estate goals.

  2. Local area knowledge

Having a real estate agent with local knowledge is a definite advantage. They can share first-hand knowledge and essential information about the particular area you’re interested in such as the current and historic market trends, neighborhood developments, types of homes, and more.

  3. Communication skills

Another important aspect to consider when evaluating a potential real estate agent is their communication skills. Having strong communication skills is crucial to keeping the whole home-buying or selling process flow smoothly. Take note of how they listen and respond to you. Do they resolve issues immediately? Do they listen and understand your concerns? Do they keep their messages simple and easy to understand? Also observe how fast they reply to your emails, calls, and texts.

  4. Schedule and flexibility

Most real estate agents are flexible with their schedules, allowing them to meet up with their clients at the latter’s preferred location and time. When looking for potential real estate agents, ask about their day-to-day agenda and how they schedule client meetings.

  5. Self-promotion

How a real estate agent promotes themselves is also an important factor. Their own marketing shows you the kind of image and brand they have as a real estate agent. Check out the websites, LinkedIn, and social media sites of your potential real estate agents. From there, you can get an idea of who they are, how they do business, and what past clients say about them.

  6. Past reviews

It’s always a good idea to check out what past clients have said about a real estate agent’s services. Look at online reviews or testimonials and ask for references from the agents themselves. You can also ask your family and friends if they have any recommendations.

  7. Chemistry and rapport

Having the right chemistry and rapport are essential to any productive working relationship. Observe how you act and feel when you’re with a potential real estate agent. Do you feel comfortable around him or her? Do they seem genuine? You don’t want to work with someone you don’t feel comfortable with.
