During this time, groups of homesteaders starting arriving and establishing their own farms. It was only in 1873 when David Barnes, a flour mill owner, arrived in the area and heard about an empty 80-acre site along a new railroad line. He seized the opportunity and started to plat a new town.

He named this new town Loveland, in honor of his good friend and railroad entrepreneur William A.H. Loveland, who originally tipped him about the empty site.
