History

Fort Collins has a long and rich history that dates back to the 1800s. The city was originally named Camp Collins after Colonel William O. Collins, a commander of the Eleventh Ohio Cavalry who authorized the area to be used a military reservation. While the camp was built to protect the area from Native Americans, the surrounding community eventually developed and became a hub for shipping, trading, and manufacturing.

After the fort was abandoned, hundreds of settlers began arriving and established a school, a post office, a general store, and a small hotel. Fort Collins was eventually incorporated in 1873 and prospered as an agricultural center after the arrival of the Colorado Central Railroad.
